Our Toxic Life Style -
Hygiene
There are no legal definitions for Natural,
Green, Eco-friendly, Botanical. It’s one of the reasons it's
important to know how to read a label. In your busy world you
may feel you don't have the time, and we will help, but you
need to be aware of the danger of everyday items.
Your skin is NOT an effective barrier to toxins. Your
shampoo, toothpaste, soap and many other everyday items are
full of toxins that are easily absorbed into your body. How can
this happen? How can our government let companies produce
products like this? Well that's a long story and you don't have
time for it now. What is important is to realize what the
dangers are and how to avoid them.
Try this; look at your toothpaste (you may need
a magnifying glass). Does it say "be careful not to swallow"?
It probably does. That's something to think about. Here's an
example: "Crest
Vivid White Fluoride Toothpaste, Invigorating
Mint".
Yummy, mint, wow! But look at the label. "... Do not swallow.
To minimize swallowing, use a pea-sized amount in children
under 6..." and "Keep out of reach of children under 6
yrs. of age. If more than used for brushing is accidentally
swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center
right away."
While they do warn you to call the poison control center,
they don't happen to mention this:

Your creams, deodorants, shampoos, etc.,
do they have "fragrance" or "natural fragrance",
listed as an ingredient? Fragrance can contain almost anything
and often does. A loophole in federal law for product
labels doesn't require companies to list any of the potentially
hundreds of chemicals in a single product's secret fragrance
mixture. Manufacturers are not required to reveal the "secret"
formulas for their fragrance and this is where they usually
have lots of dangerous chemicals such as
phathalates.
So what should you
do?
- Be aware of the dangers
- Don't assume popular brand names are
safe
- Research products and
ingredients
- "Organic" applies only to food. "Organic Shampoo"
is meaningless!
